In March of 2018 I began experimenting with photography by documenting the still life set-ups I create for paintings and drawings. This photographic process enabled me to go through many ideas very quickly, and as I continued with this medium I began combining images of plants, skies, trees and structures - mostly from our own gardens. The ability to document more plants in their various stages of growth is most welcome and intriguing.
In this age of environmental uncertainty and crisis - these images strive to depict a poignant reverence for gardens and natural places - for the sustenance of life, and for the role of the gardener/caretaker who is healed and nurtured by tending these places.

I began this series of conte/charcoal drawings in 2013. They document plants I find growing on our property that are native or escaped from farm fields. I find the sedges and grasses particularly beautiful. Space is usually important in my work, but in these simple drawings it is negative space rather than illusionistic space that interests me most. I think I will continue these drawings for years to come; they connect me to where I live.
